Chance of Life

earth Chance of LifeIn 2003, astronomer and physicist Dr. Hugh Ross released the video Journey Toward Creation. At that time, science calculated the number of stars in the universe to be 10 to the 21st power. At the same time, the requirements to not only create intelligent life, but life at all was seen as becoming more and more difficult. Obviously, we exist so either the odds don’t matter, we simply beat the odds, or something stepped-in in our favor. You make your own choice.

In this video, we see in 2003, science calculated the chance of life to be 10 to the 231st power. The odds vastly dwarf the possibility of life if you only consider 10 to the 21st number of stars with 10 to the 231st chance of life. Even if it were a 1 to1 ratio on planets to stars, the possibility is still astronomical. As of late 2008, the chance of life is now over 10 to the 430th power. As science’s knowledge grows monthly, conversely to how many of us have been thinking, the chances for life’s existence has been growing higher and higher. We are daily learning just how difficult it is for life to originate and survive in the universe.

The odds of life having first developed independently on earth, are you ready for this, have been completely eliminated. This is a naturalist/atheist view, nothing to do with Bible believers who would argue the opposite. When the revelation first came, naturalists had no choice but to abandon the possibility of life developing here and began to examine how life which developed elsewhere could have been transported to earth. Bacteria on space dust was first suggested but ruled out as radiation alone would kill the bacteria on the journey. Then, 2 meter or greater meteors were examined. Finally, this theory has been abandoned as the odds of 1 such interstellar meteor arriving on earth are far greater than even once in the age of the universe, 14 plus billion years old.

I’m not kidding on this next and last one. Naturalists greatest hope, and this is the theory they posit, now rests on the idea that aliens brought life here in earth’s past. It seems to be the only remaining explanation not involving God for life to exist on earth. Impossible? Unlikely? I can’t get away from the fact that we then need to not only calculate the odds of that alien life’s existence, but the odds of them having the incredibly advanced technology for interstellar travel. That’s not a small task. And even after their vast trip to our distant past to when life first appeared on earth to the tune of billions of years ago, there would be no way for them to guarantee life would survive in what can only be viewed as an extremely hostile universe for life in general.

Scientists are trying to come up with ideas and ways to test what took place before the Big Bang. This by definition is science examining the super natural for all of nature including the laws of physics came into existence at the Big Bang. I want science to ask those questions. But why, if answers point to design, point to intelligence and questions go beyond physics, beyond nature, are we not able to speculate that an intelligent designer may be responsible? How are aliens or multiple universes for which there is zero evidence more likely an answer than God which the fine tuning of the universe strongly indicates?

Hugh Ross, Astrophysicist, takes a look at the possibility of life on earth.
