Daily Reading – Job 24

Job 24 is an altogether depressing read. Job describes the plight of the poor (Job 24:9-10) and the sinful ways of evil men (Job 24:16). A couple of verses on how a righteous man under law, Job, views God.

Job 24:1 Why does the Almighty not set times for judgment? Why must those who know him look in vain for such days?

Job 24:23 He may let them rest in a feeling of security, but his eyes are on their ways.

Hopefully the book gets a bit more uplifting. But it’s interesting to note how Job sees God. No times for judgment immediately reminded me of Ecclesiastes 3:1-10 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven… Is that only referring to things under heaven? It also ends with a complaint about the burden God has laid on man. Now that I look at it, I see Job is referring to God casting judgment on the living, punishing them while they live.

I immediately looked to judgment as referring to that final decision we receive from God after we die.

Judgment
1 – Judgment by/through Jesus of our lives when we die
John 5:22     Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
Matthew 12:36     But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
Romans 2:16     This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

2 – Judgment on the living upon who God executes some type of punishment
Jer 25:31     The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth, for the Lord will bring charges against the nations; he will bring judgment on all mankind and put the wicked to the sword,’ ” declares the Lord.

3 – Judgment we use against other people as in:
a. Judge in a court, appointed authorities by God who pass judgment on others – Psalm 82:6-7    “I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’     But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler.”
b. When we judge other people- Romans 2:1     You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

I believe Job is referring to the second definition of judgment. Thankfully I live in a free nation where I don’t want for food, clothing or shelter. I would like to do more (something?) for people who are not as fortunate.

1Jo 3:17     If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
1 John 3:18     Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
1 John 3:19     This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence
1 John 3:20     whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

But I am surrounded by people who suffer, not from a lack of material wealth, but spiritually. I can’t be everything to everyone, but possibly I can do the most for those chasing after the material who are dead in their heart.

God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. He knows the times he will judge, the time for everything which has not yet come. We can be secure in our ways knowing that Jesus has paid for our sins, past and future. And through that security, we can move on to practice Grace with others as it has been shown to us.

2 Peter 1:2 – 8     Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
