Daily Reading – Job 31

Job 31:4, 23 Does he not see my ways and count my every step? 23 For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things.

Such things meaning doing right by others. It’s kind of a burden if you think of it that way. From what we freely received, we can now pass along to others. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them.

Job 31:15 Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?

A very good point to remember if we start judging or treating others unjustly. We can all say, Psalm 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Job 31:24, 26-28 If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,’ 26-28 if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage, then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.

I totally understand the part on gold or money today and see it as a problem in my life. The last part doesn’t relate at all. I look at the sun, the moon or a beautiful woman for that matter and think what a wonderful thing You have made.

Job 31:33, 40 if I have concealed my sin as men do, by hiding my guilt in my heart, 40 then let briers come up instead of wheat and weeds instead of barley.

Well, he’s not concealing anything from God even if he tries. I guess it’s just a kind of hyperbole I’m not used to culturally.
