Daily Reading – Job 32-35

Finally someone else speaking. Job 32:8-9 But it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the almighty, that gives him understanding. It is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right.

So true. I’ve learned tons from kids half my age. Job 32:18, 33:6-7 For I am full of words, and the spirit within me compels me; 6-7 I am just like you before God; I too have been taken from clay. No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy upon you.

Go on brother. Job 33:12-13 But I tell you you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than man. Why do you complain to him that he answers none of man’s words?

Now wait a minute. I understand that we may not understand, receive or hear an answer. But, are we not to question the situation? Job 33:31-33 Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want you to be cleared. But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.

Whoa, cocky. Job 34:11 He repays a man for what he has done; he brings upon him what his conduct deserves.

Well, not according to this story. Maybe there is something else going on which we don’t understand, but Job is not being punished. And anyway, doesn’t the rain fall equally on the righteous and the wicked? Here it is. Matthew 5:45

Hardly true on this one. Job 34:29-30 Yet he is over man and nation alike, to keep a godless man from ruling, from laying snares for the people.

This on the other hand sounds like a good idea. Job 34:31-32 Suppose a man says to God, ‘I am guilty but will offend no more. Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’

Job 35:3 Yet you ask him, ‘What profit is it to me, and what do I gain by not sinning?’     Now this seems like an excellent question but not for the reasons Elihu who speaking is eluding.  I was under the law and didn’t know it, outside of God’s protection and blessings. Deuteronomy 28:32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. God didn’t set up a bunch of rules because he wanted to control us. He simply had our best interest at heart. Hard lessons at times. But now I don’t feel like Augustine who said something like make me chaste, but not yet. I say bring it on now. I tried it that way. Help me leave it all behind. I need patience in abundance now.

Job 35:5-8 Look up at the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds so high above you. If you sin, how does that affect him? If your sins are many, what does that do to him? If you are righteous, what do you give him, or what does he receive from your hand? Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only the sons of men.

Brings back memories of the pollution commercial, the Indian walking along in the beautiful scenary, and it’s littered.  A tear streaks down his face. If God loves each and everyone of us, if sin is falling short, missing the mark, causing damage to us, others or his kingdom, I think that grieves him deeply. Genesis 6:6 The Lord was grieved that he had made men on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.

Job 35:12-13 He does not answer when men cry out because of the arrogance of the wicked. Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea; the Almighty pays no attention to it.    Well, I don’t believe that for a second. How is someone to be saved if they can’t cry out to God while they are still a sinner? Don’t get me going on lordship salvation. What does Paul say in 1 Timothy 1:15  Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners-of whom I am the worst.  Of whom I AM the worst. It’s not past tense. In Romans 6:2 he says, By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? We don’t live in sin, like a place, a prison as it were, but we still are sinners, dead to sin, and Revelations 3:17, washed white in the blood of the Lamb.

Please add humility to my request. Lots of humility.
