Jesus forgives the sins of the paralyzed man

Matthew 9:2-8, Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:18-26

Just happened to run across a message from a guy from our church. Very good message on the importance of the core of our life, Jesus. Towards the end, he asks a very good question. If a paralyzed man was brought before the church, what would we pray for?

But Jesus looked at the man and said, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”

What? Why would Jesus look at this paralyzed man and forgive his sins?

I have to say, I never really thought about it before in that way. Jesus is most focused on our heart. We would pray for healing. Jesus forgives his sins. No matter what sins were present, that was where Jesus focused. I’d possibly go farther. Since we are made in the likeness of God in spirit, since our spirit is our true self however weak or strong it may be, this is directly where God will look at us; how Jesus saw this man. While He is able to focus on the external, the superficial, He looks at our core.

Read the verses above. Jesus has finished his work. It’s almost an afterthought, simply because we need a sign of his divinity, that he restores the paralytic’s legs.
