The God who Physically Blinds

Piper Sovereignty 300x181 The God who Physically BlindsHere’s John Piper again providing a very weak God indeed using the story of the blind man Jesus heals in John 9:1-4.

God needed to blind a man to show his greatness? I need to remind myself this is the God who spoke all that we see and much more into existence. Yet he needed to blind a guy so we could call Him great once he was healed?

There would have been any number of blind men through various causes to choose from without the necessity of God taking the action of blinding someone from birth. Once again Piper’s search for sovereignty he feels are revealed in certain texts blinds him to the picture of God drawn for us throughout the Scriptures. He is sovereign. Proofs or our attempts at protecting His omnipotence are not necessary.

John 9:3     Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; (but it was so*) that the works of God might be displayed in him.
John 9:4     “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.

*Added to the Greek for the NASB.

Here’s a great example where the arbitrary verse numbering system added by man can hinder our understanding.

Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents.
That the works of God might be displayed in him, we must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day.

In other words, Jesus is saying it wasn’t his parents’ or the guy’s sin. (He doesn’t give us causation only to say what it was not.) But let me get to work on the guy so that the works of God may be shown in his life.
